The NCE Is Not a Memory Test: And That's Why Reviewing Content Alone Won't Save You

Quick answer: Strong NCE preparation includes learning counseling content and practicing how to apply that knowledge to questions. Danny emphasizes the reasoning involved when two answers seem plausible. The official examination also assesses knowledge and recall.

I want to correct a misunderstanding that costs LPC-Associates real money and real time every year: the National Counselor Examination is not a memory test.

It is a clinical reasoning test.

And the difference matters enormously when it comes to how you prepare.

The Test That Looks Like a Memory Test

The NCE covers content.

  • Theory.

  • Development.

  • Assessment.

  • Group work.

  • Research.

  • Career development.

You need to know it. But knowing it is not sufficient.

The NCE tests how you apply what you know under pressure - to a question designed to confuse you.

The question you will struggle with is not the one you don't know the answer to.

It is the one where two answers look right and you have to reason your way to the correct one.

That is a thinking pattern skill. And thinking pattern skills are not built by reviewing flashcards.

After more than twenty years of supervising LPC-Associates and watching them prepare for this exam, I have seen the same pattern: the associates who fail are almost never failing because they don't know the content.

They are failing because they are choosing answers based on what feels right instead of what the clinical reasoning framework points to.

That is a fixable problem.

NCE format update for 2027

NBCC's current NCE is a 200-item multiple-choice examination. Its newly published examination specifications take effect July 1, 2027 and describe a 170-question exam with 140 scored items and three answer choices per question. NBCC explicitly includes recall of essential counseling knowledge in its exam purpose. Danny's emphasis on clinical reasoning is therefore a preparation perspective, not a claim that factual knowledge is untested.

Frequently asked questions

Does the NCE test memorization or application?

Both subject knowledge and the ability to apply it matter. NBCC describes the exam as assessing counseling knowledge, skills, and abilities. Practice explaining why an answer is correct as well as recalling facts.

How is the NCE changing in 2027?

According to NBCC, the version effective July 1, 2027 has 170 multiple-choice questions, including 140 scored questions, with three answer options per question. Candidates should study the specifications for their test date.

What is Before You Sit?

Before You Sit is Danny L. Ross's live NCE preparation cohort. It runs six Saturday learning sessions and six Thursday study halls focused on how to reason through exam questions, starting January 9, 2027.
